The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is rapidly becoming the worst environmental disaster in American history. We are watching as an entire region is economically and environmentally destroyed in slow motion. In fact, many are calling this Gulf of Mexico oil spill a "slow motion Katrina", but the truth is that if something is not done quickly this disaster will end up being far worse than Hurricane Katrina. Once the oil slick gets into the wetlands along the Gulf Coast it is going to create a nightmare of unimaginable proportions.
So far, the efforts by BP to clean up this oil spill have been less than satisfactory. In fact, there are serious environmental concerns about the dispersal agent that BP is using to try to fight the oil spill. If BP is not careful, the solution to the problem could end up being worse for the environment than the oil spill is.
So is there a way that we can save the environment in the Gulf of Mexico that is very safe and completely organic?
Well, yes there is, and it is also incredibly inexpensive.
It is called hay.
Yes, we are being totally serious.

So will those in charge of cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico embrace this idea?
No, probably not.
But perhaps some of those who live along the Gulf Coast will take matters into their own hands and will use this idea to help save the environment along the coast where they live.

Sometimes the most simple ideas that may work are ignored . Due to the fact that the don’t originate from the perceived highly educated strata of society . A suit and tie would probably have convinced 80% of your viewers I am sorry to say. Good work guys it’s the only viable solution I have yet to see.
The best way to clean up the Gulf of Mexico, is to prevent it in the future. When something like this happens, there was always some excuse, and the truth is that in fact people are just careless, and companies looking for ways to save as much as possible, and therefore let a semi proper ships in traffic.

How much hay do you need to soak up 5,000 barrels of oil a day? Where do you get that much hay? How do you transport that hay to the gulf? What do you do with the oil soaked hay? How do you transport it away from the gulf? Do you bury it? Do you burn it? How much will that cost?
Should the hay be spread along the shore line? Should the hay be shipped out to the source of the spill?
It’s an interesting idea. But it seems like a logistical nightmare. I’m not convinced Hay is the solution to this disaster.
I hope they try this and soon. The hay can be taken care of and it can’t hurt to try.

Well, first of all:
I am pretty sure that the crude oil in the Gulf has a very different consistency than the refined oil which they used for their experiment from the canister. Crude oil should be much thicker!
Secondly, hay doesn’t really soak up the oil, it merely sticks together with the oil. Only real hair or some man-made fibres could possibly do the job and soak up a small part of the oil.
And lastly, I agree with every question that Russ Rogers asked. Alas, I think that it cannot be done. It is impossible to obtain and to transport so much hay or hair or fibre or whatever to the Gulf and to spread it onto the oil, then fish it all out again and transport it to – where?
You can be sure that the best experts from all over the world are already involved, but now that BP officially asks the population for any suggestions and new ideas, you can imagine how bad the situation and their despair really is…
Ever since the 20th century, we are treating our planet so badly, that ultimately we will have to pay the price.
I really hope that there will be a solution coming up shortly to get this damned containment box attached to the leak. The disaster gets worse and worse with every minute.

did you WATCH the video? they posed many possibilities, though none tested that i know of, it at least poses a starting-off point for a potential use.. the hay could be burned by a biowaste facility or a company that uses wood chips to make energy, they already have the filters in place to get the gunk out of the smoke.
Hey Russ, these are all great ?’s, but did you actually watch the video? It may not be the ultimate solution, I don’t know how convinced I am either, but if you actually watched the video you’d see it does a whole heckuva lot more than NOTHING. Right now, time is the biggest problem and while a long-term solution is needed to fix this disaster, a logistical nightmare sounds pretty damn good compared to waiting for the “perfect plan” while the effects of the oil spill become a REAL nightmare.
I remember a friend of my fathers years ago made pads that looked a lot like scotch brights, they would be dropped
into an oil slick and absorb most of the oil. They would then be moved to a ship or shore and be squeezed out between
rollers and reused. When he approached oil companies they were not interested because the government of where the spill
was took care of it.
Also pontoons of the same material were linked together and surrounded the spill or made a barrier that kept it from shore.
You can’t prevent stuff like this from happening, if the possible loss of more than a few billion dollars doesn’t persuade companies to be more careful, no kind of law will.
The only thing you can hope for, is that they will learn from it. You can’t built stations, ships and other kind of device 100 % safe, there is bound to be a problem sooner or later (just the magnitude of the problem changes). However, one could think about measures to REDUCE the magnitude of a problem.
