Cities all across the nation are honing in on the benefits these cars offer.

Hybrids Rear their Heads

In North America, Vancouver was the first city to officially start using hybrids in the taxicab industry. The Prius led the way, clocking over 206,000 miles before it was officially retired. From there, the trend has really taken off. 　San Francisco　now leads the nation. 50% of it’s taxis are hybrid. New York　City taxicabs are 45 percent hybrid vehicles.

The U.S. Joins the Movement

The United States first offered hybrids as part of their　taxi services　in 2005. The Ford Escape was introduced in San Francisco in small numbers. A total of 15 vehicles were paving the way for the major changes to come. By 2007, the Clean Air Taxi Grant encouraged cab companies to put even more vehicles of this kind on the streets. As the numbers of hybrids increased, New York and California began adding the Lexus RX 400 and the Toyota Highlander to the lineup.

A Global Impact

At the same time, other cities across the globe were beginning to adopt the similar policies. London was beginning to roll out hybrid-electric diesels. Azure Dynamics and London Taxis International were among the companies that spearheaded the movement abroad. The practice has spread across the globe to include cities such as Barcelona, Tokyo, Sydney, Rome, and Madrid. Nissan and Toyota have played a large part in the spread. They have gone throughout the world with demonstration campaigns that feature both the Prius and the Leaf as stars in the hybrid world.

Hybrids Opens the Alternative Door

Due to the efforts of cities around the globe to reduce their　emission levels, many of them are rolling out tax incentives to spur the growth of hybrid usage. Policies tend to vary by location, but they certainly have been integral in increasing fuel efficiency for this industry. For example, tax medallions in New York City are offered to hybrid cab drivers. This helps curbs the cost of investing in a hybrid car. Other programs have offered tax incentives as high as $2,000 for every alternative-fuel vehicle introduced into their business. The broad spectrum for rewards in California cities led to the use of compressed natural gas vehicles in addition to electric-petrol based cars.

Who Wins?

Even airports are working in conjunction with city officials to encourage the transition. In Boston, each taxi driver that is operating an alternative fuel vehicle will receive two “front of the line” passes for every shift at the Logan Airport. This incentive allows the driver to gain two extra trips per shift. Additionally, Boston encourages taxi companies to make the switch by allowing them to charge drivers who are leasing their cab an additional $15 in order to take advantage of tax medallion programs similar to those being practiced in New York. The advantages are obvious to both the cab owners and the people riding in the cabs themselves. Drivers spend much less on repairs, reducing the cost of fairs, and the number of times that drivers must stop for fuel during any given shift is also reduced.

Byline: Tatiana Gordon knows a great deal about the cab industry because she used to drive a cab of her own with Stita Taxi.

Before biofuels were seriously coming under public scrutiny, thousands of individuals were converting their VW bugs and vans to run off this excess cooking material. Enthusiastic and environmentally conscientious motorists were making their way across the country, stopping to fuel up at whatever diner there was off the edge of the highway. Vegetable oil works well in diesel engines when the viscosity is correct, but it can serve as an alternative fuel for heaters and other machinery as well.

Environmentally Friendly

WVOs are extremely friendly to the environment because, unlike fossil fuels, they do not release hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as the substance is burned. This method of powering engines is also green in nature because it eliminates waste. The cooking oil that is deemed unfit to fry food any longer is often tossed out with no hope of recycling or finding any further use. Converting WVOs into a fuel for a task that everyone must engage in only makes sense.

Benefits of Converting

One huge benefit to this practice is that most diesel-powered engines can use straight vegetable oil with very few modifications. The average driver can convert their engine themselves without holding a degree in mechanical engineering. In addition, preparing the oil for this use is a simple procedure. It only requires heating to reduce the viscosity and surface tension of the oil. Most people opt for installing a second fuel tank and a heat exchanger in order to prep the oil while it is present in the car. This technique gives drivers the option to switch between the fuel tank that burns conventional diesel and the WVO that they have collected.

People also approach powering their vehicle with vegetable oil by making blends from WVO and conventional diesel fuel. A process known as cosolvent blending will essentially dilute vegetable oil by mixing it with a low-molecular-weight solvent. The process is inexpensive and efficient. This technology has also allowed vegetable oil to be blended with kerosene and unleaded fuels; however, the efficiency levels of the fuel vary according to the type of fuel being used.

Other Uses for WVOs

The majority of residential furnaces can burn these modified vegetable oils with a high rate of efficiency as well. Any boiler system or furnace that is designed to burn No. 2 heating oil can be converted with very little effort. Again, preheating the oil before burning is the primary requirement. People that are taking advantage of this clean approach to burning fuels are recovering their WVOs from restaurants. In most cases, the oil can be acquired for little to no cost when the approach is correct. If people were to adopt this process in larger numbers, then the waste of this material and the emissions currently being released by driving would be reduced.

On an annual basis, the United States alone is estimated to produce over 2.9 billion gallons of waste vegetable oils. This oil is coming out of deep fryers and the equipment used in snack food processing facilities. If all of this oil were to be recycled, then we could potentially account for nearly 1% of the oil consumption currently going on in this country. It is a small number, although, combining this with other environmentally friendly practices is a good step forward.

Byline: Donald Swanson has written extensively about alternative sources of fuel, including Fryer to Fuel products.

Burned gratuitously by the gigaton, coal power plays a dominant and still-growing role in generating the world's electricity.

(Picture Credit-Coal miner Lee Hipshire in 1976, shortly after emerging from a mine in Logan County, W.Va., at the end of his shift. A few years later, Lee took early retirement because of pneumoconiosis, or black lung disease. He died at 57.)

Coal Deposits

Coal is a widely distributed energy resource. Reserves can be found on every continent aside from Antarctica, although they are heavily concentrated in a handful of nations.

The countries with the largest known reserves are the United States, China and Russia, collectively possessing about half of the world's recoverable tonnage. These three—along with Germany, India and Australia—account for about eighty percent of economically viable deposits globally.

The United States has far more underground than any other single nation, with over one-quarter of global reserves found within its borders. Coal is one of the U.S.'s most abundant energy resources, mined in about half of the fifty states and exported to dozens of countries around the world. Wyoming has been the top coal-producing state since the late 1980s.

Russian reserves are also vast, second only to the United States. Amounting to nearly 200 billion tons, most fields are located in the central Siberian zone. Some sixty percent of production derives from the southerly Kuzbass region alone. The Russian coal industry is large, existing primarily to supply domestic needs in one of the world's most populous territories.

Future of Coal

The future of coal as a source of global energy is not fixed, but rather depends on a complex range of environmental, economic and geological factors. Any number of variables will impact its course, from the progress of competitor energy sources to geophysical limitations, mining technology, government subsidies and carbon taxes, to name a few.

Despite the breadth of possibilities, however, it is possible to estimate major long-term trends based on current conditions. Let's take a look at some key environmental criticisms and market forecasts to assess how far King Coal is likely to take us in the years ahead.

Environmental Criticism

Ecological decline linked to extraction and combustion will increasingly reflect poorly on coal. As a nonrenewable, carbon-intensive resource with a sordid reputation, coal has drawn extensive denunciation for its role in polluting the earth's air and water. Such environmental criticisms are likely to intensify, particularly as renewable energies like solar and wind increasingly pose feasible cost-effective alternatives.

Coal, like the fast-track industrialization it fuels, could eventually encounter geophysical limits to growth. Cheaply recoverable reserves won't last forever: the Energy Information Administration estimates there's enough coal—roughly 948 billion short tons of reachable provisions—to last us about 130 years, assuming current rates of production.

Market Forecast

Coal has the competitive advantage of being extremely cheap, relatively abundant, easy to ship, and easy to burn. These are the characteristics that have made it an indispensable pillar of industrialization for at least two centuries.

Rapidly industrializing China, for example, is the world's largest consumer of coal, annually depleting as much as the entire rest of the planet combined. Yet, despite an unprecedented air pollution crisis, hundreds of new coal-fired power plants are ready to go online as needed to propel skyward Chinese economic growth.

While the industry won't benefit from spreading efforts to control emissions and pollution from dirty energies, emerging economies like China and India will continue to drive demand for coal. This substantial demand secures its role in the worldwide energy mix for the foreseeable future.

The demand for greener home goods is rapidly growing, and air conditioners are no exception. When remodeling a home or purchasing a new appliance, most homeowners seek the newest efficient, environmentally friendly models. These new products are safer for the environment and they use less energy, which means homeowners are left with a lower energy bill.

Why are Older Models Harmful for the Environment?

Old models of air conditioners used a type of CFC coolant now known to cause serious damage to the ozone layer. For that reason, newer air conditioning systems use different coolants. While even the newest air conditioners may have an adverse effect on the climate (according to the New York Times, despite the switch to refrigerants that have less of an effect on the ozone layer, gasses produced by new air conditioners still affect climate change), homeowners looking to go “green” will be happy to make do with the newest technology available.

At the very least, air conditioners are far greener now than they have ever been. For those who live in a hot climate, living without air conditioning is a difficult prospect to face. Not only is it miserable, but it can also be dangerous for the elderly or anyone with chronic health conditions. While there are currently no air conditioning systems or units that are 100 percent green, the following units and systems pose less of an environmental toll than others do.

www.specialtyheating.com

energyinformative.org

blogs.anl.gov

Geothermal Systems

Geothermal HVAC systems are considered to be the least polluting. This system uses a combination of water, flowing through pipes that are buried deep in the earth, and fans to cool the home naturally. These systems must be professionally installed, but energy savings will quickly make up for the cost of installation.

ENERGY STAR Units

ENERGY STAR　is a government EPA program designed to help businesses and consumers reduce energy use. Products with an ENERGY STAR label have been tested for energy efficiency. The less energy a unit must use to do the job, the easier it is on the environment, in general.

Some central air conditioning units and systems with this label include the following: Broan FS4BI Series with iQ Drive Control, Fraser-Johnston Premium Series, and LG LSU/LSN Series with Comfort Alert Control.

Window units with the ENERGY STAR label include the following: Frigidaire - 8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner, model FRA086AT7, Hanover - 6,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner, model HANAW06A and GE 115 Volt Room Air Conditioner, Model #: AEN12AQ.

Many other brands and models qualify. Just look for the ENERGY STAR label before making your purchase.

In addition to choosing a greener air conditioner, you can make minor adjustments to your home to keep things cooler. Use insulating shades that block heat from your windows. When running a window unit in one room, keep doors closed so that the cool air is not dispersed. These small steps add up to big savings for your pocketbook and the environment.

Byline: Frank Anderson recently looked up air conditioning repair in Richardson and found a few good companies that could repair his leaky AC so as to be more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly.

The world's farm land appears to be turning into deserts. With all of our science and all of our learning on crops, why?

I think it is because of the dismissal of rules of common sense and from the Bible.

Factory farms are just plain wrong.

The Bible basically states we should rotate crops. Those crops should rotate and land should be allowed to recover once every seventh year. That means letting it grow wild on the seventh year.

Every once in a while we need to have a Jubilee year where everything goes back to the way it started.

Basically that is what the Bible says. To me it is a handbook on how to run Planet Earth.

When you go against the basics, then things fall apart.

The biggest failed experiment in history was the use of land prior to the great depression of the 30s. The result was a wrecked ecology. The dust storms of Oklahoma need no comment.

We have gotten away from those basics with the factory farms. Factory farms are not efficient, contrary to what people think. Keeping livestock in small cages and feeding them the wrong foods to get them fat in a hurry and ready for slaughter is wrong. That meat has very little nutritional value.

Why are we putting up with it? Mainly it is economics. I call it crash and burn economics. In the short term, there are wonderful profits from this Satan-based farming. In the long run there are multiple problems. But by then the managers of these farms have moved on to bigger and better crash and burn plans in other industries or they have promoted themselves to the top.

These animals are fed antibiotics in large quantities to keep them alive in cages.

They are fed corn. Much of this corn and grain is from questionable sources.

That means all the meat from these animals is laced with antibiotics. We are literally eating those antibiotics in our meat.

All those antibiotics means they become less effective in treating disease. Disease becomes immune to the antibiotics. Then what do you do? You have an epidemic of immune diseases on your hands. People die.

Our hospitals are reporting this immunity every day. Right now you are better off to avoid a hospital at any cost. You are likely to be in a breeding ground of disease.

In the name of money, we are allowing farmers to do things that are just plain wrong. Mad Cow disease is an example. I think it starts with salvaging weak and dying animals and feeding them back to the caged animals. They are eating their own flesh and blood in this scene. That is wrong. The result is Mad Cow disease and others.

There are conflicting theories concerning disease. Pasteur recommended sterile environments and I agree with him to a certain extent.

The other theory is that we need a balanced environment of good bacteria to fight the bad.

This is much more complicated and expensive to put together. It is always much less expensive to boil away our troubles with food. That is called pasteurization.

The staff of life has always been wheat. Or is it?

I think grass might be a better description of a staff of life. Many of our animals have special digestive systems to make grass a viable food for them. Horses and Cattle are good examples as are Buffalo. Lambs also need grass. Grass supports the entire cycle of life.

They all have one common denominator. All of these animals produce waste products. The waste products are a cycle. That cycle places fertilizer in the soil to be used by other animals such as worms to put together a good soil for gardening. The same happens on a regular basis on our real farms.

I think what has happened in our past ias we have destroyed large areas of land by not managing this cycle properly. I think the common enemy might be grazing animals that leave nothing in its path. Goats are a good example of this kind of grazing animal. They eat everything down to the roots. What is left turns to deserts.

I think that is one of the causes of the Sahara in Africa. Something as simple as herds of goats.

It isn't that simple really. At one time, a great lake watered most of Africa on a regular basis. Then geology in the form of a huge earthquake emptied the lake. In the following years, the land could not keep up because the rainfall disappeared. We lost the battle there for the land.

We are losing the battle in our plains states. Droughts have devasted a lot of farms in the area. Lack of water equals deserts.

Usually what happens is we have long periods of little or no rain. Then the land dries out. When the land dries out it can go in two directions. If it is covered in drought resistant grass, it comes back. If it is covered in crops, it turns to dust and dust turns the land to desert. Usually what happens is you have a Monsoon of rain that drains away the top soil. Then nothing in the way of rain for a long period of time.

I think this is happening world wide. So one of the biggest problem facing all of us is forming a true relationship between us and the recycling of the land. That should take priority over everything else we do. We need to feed our people. Any government out there that doesn't do this will face huge problems in the future.

One thing the depression taught us was the need to feed our people and recycle the land so it can feed us in the future. If that foundation of farming goes away, we are truly going to starve.

While there have been many improvements recently in green technology, car manufacturers still have a long way to go before they can produce a car that is one hundred percent free of fossil fuels.

Natural Gas

Since natural gas hit the car market eleven years ago, the number of natural gas vehicles in use today exceeds eight million around the world. Tighter government emissions standards and pressure that's being put on manufacturers has helped the natural gas movement come a long way. This is especially true in the semi-truck industry.

Low carbon fuel technology is now being used in semi-trucks and has been estimated to emit as much as thirty percent less greenhouse gas than diesel. Because manufacturing costs have been severely reduced due to the large expansion of natural gas vehicle production, green-friendly semi-trucks are becoming more affordable. This is good news for truck drivers and transportation companies alike because current fuel costs show that CNG costs as much as $1.80 less per gallon than diesel.

Plug-In Hybrids

While normal hybrids offer consumers fifty miles per gallon, plug-in hybrids can reach one hundred miles per gallon or more. This is made possible by the larger batteries that are installed in these vehicles.

While plug-in hybrids have offered consumers a more affordable way to drive longer distances, a bigger battery means a higher sticker price because batteries are often the most expensive part of any hybrid vehicle.

Another major concern is the battery life and the amount of recharges that it must go through. Manufacturers are concerned that the recharge regimen will reduce the life of the battery at a much quicker pace. This, combined with the enormous cost of larger batteries, have slowed the plug-in hybrid movement for the time being.

The Dodge Charger: An Electric Car Concept with Zero Emissions

The next Dodge Charger may be the perfect example of a zero-emissions vehicle. The Dodge ZEO, which stands for Zero Emissions Operation, provides ample power that is equivalent to the HEMI V-8 engine but emits zero emissions.

The advanced propulsion system that the ZEO offers is said to have a range of over two hundred fifty miles. The car achieves this with a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that's located beneath the cabin floor. The location of the battery pack provides for more efficient handling and a lower center of gravity, thus increasing the range of the vehicle.

Because of its sleek body style and two-door design, the Dodge ZEO has separated itself from other zero-emissions vehicles that are currently being designed. While Dodge has designed the ZEO as a two-door sports coupe, the car has ample room for four passengers.

The Future of Zero Emissions Vehicles and Green Technology

The future of green technology and zero-emissions vehicles is bright. Most car manufacturers currently have some type of green concept vehicle. Bio-diesel, ethanol, hydrogen cars, natural gas, and electrical-powered vehicles will eventually lead to complete elimination of our dependence on fossil fuels.

Byline: Aaron recently went to an Arlington car dealer to purchase his new automobile, which he has found to be much more gas-efficient then his last car.

LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an invaluable asset to any new construction project. This building rating system standardizes the characteristics of buildings that ensure it is efficient, environmentally friendly, and provides a safe atmosphere for employees or residents. This independently applied certification was developed by United States Green Building Council but is now being put into practice across the entire globe. Buildings that score well within this system use green products and technology from the roof down to the individual nails. High ratings increase property value, lessen the total costs of construction, and reduce the amount of energy necessary to regulate the internal environment.

What Can Roofing Do?

Green roof designs can vary widely from building to building. However, the LEED certification standards have been designed around allowing buildings to earn credits based on the most critical aspects of efficiency that are related to typical green roofing projects. Many green roofing systems will take advantage of vegetative resources as a prime material. Incorporating plants into the roofing system falls under the “Protecting and Restoring Habitats” regulations. The plants used must require almost no artificial irrigation, and they may not be dependent on pesticides or unnatural fertilizers of any kind. Companies taking this approach to roofing should also cover at least 50% of the surface area in vegetation. This level of coverage promotes creating a heat island effect, thereby increasing the insulation efficiency of the roof.

If the vegetative roofing does require artificial irrigation, then LEED points can be earned by using drip irrigation whose water is coming from a reclaimed source such as collected run off from pure sources at use in other parts of the building. Energy performance is a large part of the evaluation as well, providing the possibility of earning up to 19 LEED points. There are minimal energy efficiency levels that must be met before a project can even qualify for LEED certification to begin with. When constructing a green roof, companies must demonstrate a specific percentage of improvement in energy consumption over more traditional methods of roofing the same type of structure.

Additional Roofing Forms

Not all green roofs must take the vegetative approach. Many roofs take advantage of recycled materials and waste from other building projects. This part of the system is organized under the “Material Reuse” and “Recycled Products” guidelines. They are meant to reduce the demand for raw material that must be processed and refined to a great extent before being put into use. Any materials of this nature incorporated into the design must be categorized as post-consumer or pre-consumer items, referring to their method of production and acquisition. These components must, at a minimum, contribute to 10% or 20% of the total value of recycled materials used in the project. Determining the exact figure for the total value in recycled material is done by weight. This number is then multiplied by the total cost of assembling the materials into usable components.

Companies or homes installing a green roof can potentially earn close to 30 LEED points. By merely covering half of the roof with vegetative materials during the construction, projects generally gains two points at minimum. Gaining 9 points from just the roofing system can actually account for 20% of the total points needed for a building to become LEED certified.

Byline: Jeff Cooper recently used Remedy Roofing to help fix the leaks and wear of his old roof.

Spring is a season of stirring anticipation. As the ground thaws and flowers start to bloom, house-dwellers get eager to throw open the windows and embrace the warming air. With that comes a sense of renewal that's most evident in the annual tradition of spring cleaning. Cleaning out your home can be a great way to expel clutter accumulated over the winter, but if you want to do it while being environmentally friendly, you'll need to take stock of your current cleaning habits.

Going green when cleaning doesn't require a drastic overhaul of your current cleaning approaches. Rather, you only have to make small adjustments, and in some cases this simply means investing in new products. Here's a list of steps you can take to go green as you spring clean.

Use washable cleaning rags

Paper towels are a convenient cleaning resource, but they're wasteful. Instead, use cloth cleaning rags that can be washed and reused. It's a little extra laundry, but that's preferable to adding to the contents of your local landfill.

Toss out chemical-based cleaners

The chemicals in many cleaners may actually pose a health risk to you and your family, in addition to being harmful to the environment. You don't need those chemicals to enjoy a clean home. With a few simple ingredients, you can make your own all-natural, 100 percent safe cleaners. For example, a solution of one part vinegar and one part water does a great job of cleaning windows and mirrors. Or, conversely, you can choose from a wide variety of all-natural cleaners at the store.

Open your windows

The fresh breeze through an open window can clean your indoor air and bring a freshness to the space that's hard to replicate when the windows. That's not to say you shouldn't dust or vacuum at all, but an open window can make these other cleaning tasks less frequent—and the feel of fresh air isn't something you can fabricate.

Invest in green disposables

Biodegradable trash bags and other disposable items can be a great way to minimize your impact on the environment. To some degree, disposables of some sort are hard to cut out of your routine. A more practical alternative for many people is investing in trash bins, cleaning materials and other products made from recycled or biodegradable materials, giving your conscience some relief.

Start your own compost bin

Many families can significantly decrease the amount of trash they send to the curb by setting up their own compost bin. Composting is a great way to reduce trash volume while getting a second use out of your food waste. Once organic materials are allowed to biodegrade in your compost bin, you can use the resulting matter as fertilizer in your garden or landscaping.

Don't dump—donate

Getting rid of old clothes and forgotten junk is a big part of spring cleaning. But instead of sending these items out with the trash, give them a chance at a second life by donating them to a local second-hand store. Plus, donating them means you can use these items as a write-off on your taxes.

When you're just starting out on your path to a greener lifestyle, don't overwhelm yourself with drastic changes right from the get-go. Instead, take time to make this transition gradually and only bite off what you can chew. As you get comfortable with these changes, you can push yourself further to become more eco-conscious and to create a smaller carbon footprint.

Many people want to believe that their home will never be victimized, but that's not what will keep burglars away. It's impossible to know when or how intruders may strike, and what threat that poses to your home and family. The only way to reliably defend yourself is by installing preventative features that will turn intruders away before they cause any harm.

Home security comes in a number of different forms. In addition to practicing safe habits like locking doors and windows and keeping an eye out on your neighbors' homes, you'll also want to install some features on your home, and in some cases multiple changes might be beneficial. Here's a quick guide to outfitting your home to be more secure against outside threats.

A Home Security Kit

Home security kits are the most commonly known home safety measure, and they're very effective. A good system uses pass codes to arm and disarm the security system, which can send alerts to local authorities whenever doors, windows or other openings are breached -- even if not forcibly so. The automated alerting of the authorities takes the stress off of your end, allowing you to focus on personal safety.

If you have children, invest in a home security kit that your kids will be able to learn and understand, giving them the freedom to go in and out of the house without triggering a call to the police. And be sure to display your security system signs outside your home -- these alone could be enough to turn away would-be intruders.

An Outdoor Surveillance Camera

Cameras are useful in observing the areas around your home, particularly ones that may be susceptible to trespassers. Consider installing a camera to observe doorways or other points of entry outside of your home, as well as the surrounding areas. Use this device to watch not just for human intruders, but also invading wildlife that could be stealing from your garden or committing other damage to your property.

If possible, set up a camera that records video. Even if your home is burglarized or vandalized, you could provide valuable evidence to help authorities track down the culprits.

Picture Credit Above- My Security Sign

A Garage Door Opener

A garage door opener gives you remote control over this potential entry into your home, and it makes things much tougher for a potential intruder. If possible, choose from the garage door openers that come equipped with a light. A well-lit garage and automatic door will make it easier to enter and leave your home safely, and while observing your surroundings. Test this door to make sure it reverses course easily when something trips its sensors -- this will alert you to a possible intruder, whether human or animal.

And given the ease of closing your garage door, keep it shut as much as possible -- especially when you're not home. An empty garage is an open invitation to steal bikes, machinery and other goods, and to advance into the home itself.

While your home is a huge investment, it's the people inside that are most crucial to protect. A multi-faceted approach to security will deter intruders and hasten response times from the authorities, keep danger at bay. These features are a small price to pay for the security and comfort they provide, so look into your options and start developing a security
strategy today.

can save you money in the long run, especially when it comes to purchasing the right kind of vacuum. And you’re not just saving money; vacuums help eliminate potential health hazards in your own home, including allergens and toxic particles like mold.

So what vacuum cleaners should you purchase? Consider these tips when investing in a vacuum that will keep your home clean and your budget down.

Photo Credit- Dyson Vacuum on Amazon

Areas To Clean Is your house fully carpeted? Wood floors? Rugs? Regardless of your flooring, dust is an inevitable problem for all homes, created by people and fabric, and purchasing the right vacuum could improve your air quality, which improves your health.

Tiny flakes of skin, microscopic fibers from clothing—locating where dust and toxins like these collect is a great way to know where to vacuum and what kind of vacuum will be most beneficial for these areas, such as a Stick vacuum that can help you clean hard-to-reach areas. Your house has places to vacuum that you don’t consider, typically. Like your refrigerator coils, for instance. Vacuuming appliances can reduce your energy
bill each month by twenty dollars or more. Also, make sure you frequently vacuum closets, as this is where dust collects and spreads thereafter.

HEPA and Air Quality Features

Many vacuums actually release particulates and dust into the air when you clean. Rather than cleaning your floors, these vacuums actually stir up dust, depositing it into the air. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are the best way to ensure your vacuum is not releasing these particulates each time you clean, and this can improve your air quality and reduce the amount of allergens caused by pet dandruff.

Keep your vacuum clean to keep your air clean, too. By looking for holes in the suction tubes and washing the
canister frequently, you can increase the life and capability of your vacuum. Continuing with an old, broken vacuum might seem more convenient, but these vacuums can actually do more harm than good if not fixed or
replaced.

Power & Performance, Type & Style

The space you live in influences the kind of vacuum you should purchase. From studio apartments to five- or six-bedroom houses, each housing situation requires a different kind of vacuum, and you want to make sure you purchase the right one for your specific needs. For example, you might only require a canister vacuum rather than an upright if you live in an area with little square footage.

Keep in mind your own health concerns as you purchase a vacuum, as some will do a better job of removing fine particles from the air. In fact, if you use a bag vacuum, the bags act as a second filter after the HEPA filter. Each type and style of vacuum will have their pros and cons, so it’s best to identify what you care about most, and to then search out a vacuum that fits these needs.

Minor changes in the distribution process can save money and reduce a company's carbon footprint,
which is excellent for both branding and the environment. Below are four ideas, from fuel management to electronic route planning, that are changing the way products get to the shelves.

1. Measure first. Before making changes, conscientious business owners get baseline figures to work from. By using numbers from the accounting side, management can determine exactly what percentage of the budget currently goes toward distribution. Combined with an accurate measurement of the business's carbon footprint, these figures give business owners concrete data -- data that, according to one study, show
companies’ immediate, actionable areas for improvement in 80 percent of cases.

2. Spec the vehicles. Changes to the trucks themselves can rapidly increase a business's collective MPG.
Smaller businesses that provide their own transport can make modifications like auxiliary power units, low profile tires and increased engine torque ratings. Companies choosing a fleet provider should look at aerodynamic designs and the use of EOBRs to track trips.

3. Consolidate trips and lighten the load. One of the advantages of an EORB (electronic on-board recorder) is the ability to ensure that fleets are taking the shortest distance to their destinations, which
will ultimately reduce fuel. By planning routes to include nearby drop-offs without waste, employees on the logistics planning side can save transport time and costs. Simply driving 10 miles per hour more slowly and reducing some of the weight, whether in useless shelves or excess packing materials, can have an
impact of up to 15 percent.

4. Look at logistics. A recent study by Future Supply Chain 2016 confirmed the importance of sustainability. The model they recommend involves reducing energy consumption from the top down and using GPS technology to avoid traffic congestion. Idling is a major fuel waster. They recommend keeping track of how well supply is performing. Low performers are cut to reduce waste and unnecessary weight on
shipments. Results were lower lead-time, fewer CO2 emissions and improved availability of the products consumers were most interested in purchasing.

Going "green" is the best way business owners can improve their model. It is popular with customers and easy to advertise, it's morally responsible, it can in some cases garner tax advantages, and most importantly, it cuts costs. Simply evaluating carbon consumption highlights areas for improvement, meaning businesses can trim the budget without sacrificing employees. Most of the best money saving and fuel management tips are the same common sense tricks used at home -- drive conservatively, don't overdo air conditioning, keep windows up at high speeds. However, applying these changes across the board can make a big difference to the big picture.

(Factory Converted Electric Hybrid of the Chevy Silverado) Photo Credits Here

Environment

If the environment is your number one priority, you will want an all-electric vehicle. The only other vehicles with zero emissions are natural gas or hydrogen prototypes. When shopping, be aware that there are only a handful of true all-electric cars. Electric models include the Nissan Leaf and the new Ford Focus Electric.

Price

Electric car prices may approach $40,000. The price may be offset by a tax credit and by a savings of $1,500 or more on fuel. For many, the all-electric price is still too high, especially for a car that can't make long trips easily. For a better price and better selection, many green consumers opt for a hybrid. Compared to electric, these offer more horsepower and an extensive driving range. Compared to regular cars, hybrids offer low emissions and excellent fuel economy. Fuel savings on a hybrid quickly add up, helping these cars pay back their owners.

Driving Range

The Nissan Leaf and the Ford Focus EV can go about 100 miles on a single charge. The 66-horsepower Mitsubishi iMiev can go up to 62 miles on a charge. Clearly these cars are designed for the average commute to and from work, but they would not function well for long distance trips. By contast, true hybrid vehicles have longer driving ranges than comparable vehicles because they are more fuel-efficient.

Plug-in vehicles with gas engines offer an extended range. The Chevy Volt can go for up to 40 miles on a charge. Then its unique gasoline engine powers the battery for up to 300 miles more. The Prius Plug-In has a hybrid's long distance range, but it uses its electric power to provide gas-free driving for up to 11 miles.

Check the Fine Print

When looking for a hybrid, remember that some manufacturers use hybrid technology to increase horsepower. These so-called hybrids may still have poor fuel economy, and they may not reduce the vehicle's carbon footprint.

Horsepower and Torque

Drivers will find that electric cars usually offer low horsepower. The Leaf only offers 104 hp, but it does manage 187 lb-ft of torque. Higher torque can compensate for lower horsepower by providing the acceleration needed for the highway. The 2013 Ford Focus EV is projected to offer 143 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. If the projected horsepower is accurate, the Ford Focus EV will be the first electric car to catch up with hybrids such as the standard Prius. Hybrid cars also have lower horsepower than their counterparts. At present, this is the sacrifice that consumers must make when choosing a low emissions vehicle with good fuel economy. As the technology advances over the next few years, hopefully horsepower and torque will improve.

Tax Incentives

Tax incentives on hybrids such as the standard Prius have expired. Electric car tax credits include $7,500 for the Volt, Leaf and Focus EV. The C-Max Energi earns a $3,751 tax credit. The Prius Plug-In earns a $2,500 tax credit.

Whether you choose an all-electric or true hybrid car, you can be sure that reducing your global footprint is a great move.

They have a man-made environment of bricks, concrete, steel and glass. Even the parks are man-made.

Being outside in a city park is not the same as being outdoors in a natural environment. However, many folks who spend their lives in big cities are not familiar with natural environments. In fact, the environment is something they might not even think about very much.

It's hard for folks to appreciate the environment without spending time in it. Camping is a great way to introduce urban folks to the environment and let them experience it directly. Spending time outdoors in the natural world, engaging in hands-on activities that expose them to the aesthetic beauty of the environment is a fun way to gain an appreciation for the outdoors.

Where To Camp

Some of the best campgrounds are in state parks. They preserve the natural environment and ecosystems and contain a variety of plants, mammals and birds, which are interdependent on the environment. Where there is water, there are fish. Moreover, if people don't want to buy a tent, many state parks have rustic cabins with beds. Some cabins have beds with mattresses, while others have wooden beds without mattresses. All that a camper needs is a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad for under it if more comfort is desired on a wooden bed.

For example, many state parks in Michigan offer rustic cabins for rent with some of them having electricity or even a propane or wood stove for heat in the winter.

The need for heat isn't an issue in sunny Florida, which has 20 state parks offering primitive, rustic or modern cabins.

Colorado not only has cabins but also has yurts in some state parks.

Camping Activities

There are many activities folks can enjoy while camping. At night, there is far less light than in a city, which means many more stars are visible. Campers can always relax in a chair outside and look at the sky, while listening to the sounds of nocturnal birds and animals nearby.

During the day, many people take hikes and look at the trees, shrubs and whatever plants or flowers are blooming and try to identify what they are looking at. Many camping areas have water nearby, a stream, river, pond or lake for exploring. Other activities include fishing, wading, swimming or kayaking. In addition, most camping areas have trails that are suitable for bicycling as well as walking, where people are surrounded by nature and silence except for the sounds of birds and other animals.

Birding is another activity for campers. Florida's state parks have almost 100 different bird species. Many Florida state parks, including Myakka, have free ranger programs to help campers get started on looking for and identifying birds.

Colorado state parks have such a variety of mammals, birds, fish and more to view that they put profiles of the wildlife up on their Website, so that people can familiarize themselves with what they can see before they get there to camp.

In winter, campers can go cross-country skiing in nature and look for animal tracks in the snow in Michigan state parks.

Urban folks who go camping might return home with a greener mindset about preserving the natural environment outdoors.

Byline: Dianne Cooper recommends visiting the DeMontrond RV website if RV Consignment interests you or if you are just ready to experience the outdoors perhaps with a different RV.

There is no doubt that installing solar panels in your house will be better for your future. You will be able to save a lot of money. But buying the panels itself is an expensive proposition and not something that everyone can afford. If you cannot afford to buy a house, then you can just not think about buying solar panels. You can instead follow the tips given below so that you get the solar panels and save money –

1. Renting Solar Panels

If buying solar panels is too expensive for you, then you can rent them. There are a number of companies offering the panels on rent. These companies charge a flat rate for the electricity generated by the solar panels. And, the best part is that the rates will never increase. If your are living in a rented apartment, then it is best to speak to your landlord to install the solar panels and pay a fixed price for the electricity.

2. Buy Inexpensive solar Panels On Ebay

Ebay is the site where you can buy genuine goods in new or used condition. Of course, you don’t have to buy used ones, but they will surely be cheaper than buying new panels. You can also buy them from a local store, but this is an expensive option. Since you are not able to afford your own house, what is the point of buying expensive panels. Buy them from Ebay now and you can upgrade later on when you have the funds.

3. Get Discounted Government Rates

The government has set specific standard for fire code. If you meet these standards, then the government will offer you discounted rates on the photovoltaic system. The discount can be as much as 30% and you will be able to save a substantial amount of money. Isn’t this a better option? When you are constructing your house and installing the fire and electrical codes, ensure that they meet the government standards so that you can take advantage of the discounts.

4. Build a Solar Panel At Home

If you are good with your hands and are able to follow instructions properly, then you can build a solar panel at home. It is easy to build one and is a very inexpensive option. You will need a copper flashing sheet, clip leads, and micro-ammeter to read currents. You can also use LCD multimeters. In addition, you will need a big plastic bottle that is clear, a kitchen stove (electric stove is better), tap water, common salt, sandpaper, and metal shears. Also, you will need to invest in your time and your panels will be ready.

These are 4 ways that will help you save money when installing solar panels. The panels are necessary in these days of economic crunch as they slash a big portion on your utility bills.

You can buy solar panels from Baker Electric Solar and make your home environment friendly. Of course, the Government discounts and the tax deductions that you get are an added bonus.

It is, however, a critical issue when it comes time for the Olympics games or government conventions. In general, heavily populated cities suffer the most from dangerous air quality, with higher cases of lung diseases reported every year. The most polluted cities tend to be located in developing regions due to poor environmental regulations and dirtier cars, factories, and power plants. Surprisingly, the list of urban areas with the worst air quality does not include the economic giants one usually hears about: Beijing, Bangkok, Mexico City, and Chongqing, for instance. The reason many of these countries are not the most polluted is they have taken many steps to improve the quality of air by reducing gas emissions and passing new environmental laws. While the air in L.A. is bad, it is far, far, far worse in other parts of the world (1). Smaller cities in South Asia hold the top 10 rankings for the world’s poorest air quality:

1. Ahwaz, Iran

2. Ulan Bator, Mongolia

3. Sanadaj, Iran

4. Ludhiana, India

5. Quetta, Pakistan

6. Kermanshah, Iran

7. Peshawar, Pakistan

8. Gaberone, Botswana

9. Yasouj, Iran

10. Kanpor, India

These rankings are examined according to he levels of pollutants found in the atmosphere, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulates (lead, dust, ammonia, and soot). For the most part, these cities are unknown to the world, aside from the fact they are known for hazardous air quality. Despite their unfortunate reputation, these cities share similar economic conditions – they are fairly poor. With the inclusion of Botswana, however, even middle-income countries are not impervious to dangerous air pollution.

Residents of these developing countries often burn firewood, coal, or dung for heat and energy, which produces a thick polluted smoke. Old, inefficient cars add their own black carbon into the atmosphere. Add in exploding populations in crowded environments and extreme weather conditions, air pollution is a serious problem. According to the WHO, over 2 million people a year die from exposure to bad air, most in under-developed countries and cities. It has also been researched that particularly nasty particles can lodge into the lung and trigger heart attacks and other cardiovascular issues. When examined in animal models, such exposure led to brain damage.

The WHO recommends safe air to be 20 micrograms per cu m of PM10 or less, with PM10 being the worst kind of pollution particles. One of the world’s most polluted cities, Ahvaz in Iran, has over 372 micrograms per cu m. The most populated cities, such as Beijing and New Delhi, also suffer from industrial pollution, with every two in five residents diagnosed with respiratory illness. Overall, the worst air pollution is clustered in South Asia. The cleanest city, according to WHO standards, Whitehorse, Canada, has just over 3 micrograms per cu m of PM10. Fortunately, some countries have improved air quality, such as Russia, Iraq, and Ecuador.

Scientists and environmentalists are acutely aware of the invisible threat, but developing countries suffer the worst exposure. For residents living in the world’s most polluted cities, there is little that can be done to protect oneself against poor air quality. Most scientists recommend leaving the city, but for many, that is not a viable option. Even the United States suffers from intense levels of air pollution, tying with Japan and Argentina.

Unfortunately, driving a car is unavoidable in some circumstances, and for people who aspire to a uniformly green way of living, this can be a frustrating reality.

But if you can't find a way around using a car -- at least in certain situations -- you can still make your driving habit less destructive to the environment. Read on to find out how you can instantly go green while still cruising around on four wheels.

Stop warming up the engine

Yes, driving in the winter is cold, and it's much nicer to go out, turn on the car, and then come back in side for 10 or more minutes while the heat finally kicks in and warms the interior to a livable temperature. But while you're trying to escape the cold, the earth is choking on your fumes. The extra time spent idling in the driveway increases the emissions released into the air. By simply getting in and driving, you'll use less gas and create less fuel waste.

Resist the air conditioning

On the other side of the climate control coin is using and abusing your car's air conditioner. Try to abstain from artificially cooled air by rolling down the windows whenever possible. It's less electricity used, and electricity is generated by using your car's petrol fuel to charge up the battery. Save the AC for the hottest days and the environment will thank you.

Lighten your load

Your trunk space may be overloaded with items you don't really need on a regular basis. Whenever possible, take unnecessary cargo out of the car and store it in your garage or in your house. The added weight will cut into your fuel efficiency and reduce your per-gallon mileage, costing more in fuel. Plus, the extra weight places unnecessary strain on your car's structural parts, thereby requiring more frequent repairs and maintenance.

Replace your tires

The industry standard rubber tires seen on many vehicles is slowly falling out of fashion. Instead, the new big thing is outfitting your vehicle with refined synthetic rubber. By using this synthetic alternative, you can reduce the number of processed tires on the road and decrease rubber tire waste.

Air tires frequently

Tires that are too inflated or too low in tire pressure wear down faster and are more likely to blow early in their lifespan. Plus, poorly inflated tires can kill a vehicle's fuel efficiency. One of the best ways to make sure your tires are properly aired up is to invest in an air compressor and keep it in your garage -- that way you can adjust tire air pressure as needed without making a trip to the nearest air filling station. You'll get more mileage out of your tires and your fuel costs will improve.

Obey the Speed Limit

It's a pretty simple concept: speeding excessively pushes your vehicle's fuel consumption beyond its range of greatest efficiency. By slowing down on the highway, you're actually improving fuel efficiency. Try to keep your vehicle's engine between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm for the best results.

Of course, you should always try to avoid driving whenever possible. Less time in the driver's seat is always good for the environment, even if you're just carpooling with others or taking public transit. If you can do that, you won't feel as bad when circumstances force you to get in your car and go for a drive.

After all, that food you eat has to be shipped over hundreds or even thousands of miles to your local market. Eating locally is a good idea, but an even better idea is to grow your own food. Here are some reasons:

1. Control the quality – The first reason why you should grow your own food is to control the quality of what you put into your body. If you grow your food you can avoid pesticides and unnatural fertilizers. Instead you can plant according to your area and use natural pesticides to keep your veggies growing strong. You can also grow heirloom plants that are naturally pest resistant and offer better nutrition. They also taste better!

2. Cut your bills –We spend a lot of money at the grocery store. Every month we go and but the things we need. But what if you only had to buy a handful of things? Growing your own food allows you to eat good food without having to pay for it. Seeds and starter plants are cheap, as cheap as dirt, and they grow fast providing you with a great selection.

3. Eat seasonally –Another thing that is beneficial about growing your own food is that you eat seasonally. This can help you to come up with new recipes and try new foods. Seasonal foods taste better.

Growing your own food is easy no matter where you live. Even if you do not have a large outdoor space you can still grow plants in window boxes or vertical gardens along a wall or balcony. Save the environment from more transportation costs and over farming. It is easy to get started and eat healthier in the bargain.

As the saying goes, "Nothing is stronger than the heart of a volunteer" no truer words have ever been spoken. The volunteer cares nothing of reimbursement or recognition for his or her efforts. All that matters is that the job needs to be done. The volunteer firefighter is one of those that not only does what needs to be done, but puts his or her life in danger in order to save someone else. This is done without regret, fear, or hazard pay. What puts the volunteer firefighter into perspective when determining the amount of help they provide?

1. Training - Firefighting can be a very dangerous occupation. Even a volunteer firefighter will receive top training in order to save others and themselves. While some areas offer an abridged version of basic training, others will include volunteers in the classes and exercises provided to career fighters. Complete with EMT training, volunteer firefighters are nearly indistinguishable from those who have made it a life-long career choice.

2. Skills - While many volunteers will do menial grunt work, most of them will possess the necessary skills to provide assistance in any aspect of firefighting. Advanced training methods, first aid, and other attributes are built into the volunteer. As opposed to other organizations, having the most knowledge possible can literally save the life of the volunteer and/or the person they are helping.

Firefighting requires more than on-the-job training. The wrong move, hesitation, or lack of knowledge could put the volunteer and his or her crew in grave jeopardy. It's not like volunteering for the Salvation Army where ringing a bell in front of the grocery store at Christmas time can help a family in need. It's nearly unheard of for a life and death circumstance to happen while washing dishes at a soup kitchen.

3. Self-sacrifice - Many volunteers offer what skills they have to an organization to which they believe in order to complete the task that needs done. The volunteer firefighter offers his or her skills and life in order to complete the task. They know there is a chance that today could be the day that they make the ultimate sacrifice for a fellow human being. There is no higher sacrifice than giving one's life in order to save another. And these volunteers should be held in the highest regards for they are willing to do just that. Not many of us can truthfully admit to offering ourselves in this manner.

Many volunteer firefighters have lost their lives throughout the years protecting and helping others. They are a true testament to putting others ahead of themselves. Although there are plenty of jobs where men and women put themselves in jeopardy in order to save others, the volunteer firefighter does so without expecting a paycheck. Not many can put themselves in the place of these selfless individuals. However, volunteers of all kinds make a difference in the world. You don't have to sacrifice yourself in order to help others. Get involved today and join an organization nearby to help make the world a better place.

The allure was great. Imagine a fuel source that can be grown over and over again. It was the definition of renewable. Unfortunately, the reality is that alcohol based fuel come with some pretty big strings attached and it looks a lot less attractive when viewed up close.

Food or Fuel?
A primary source of alcohol fuel comes from corn. Because of government requirements for ethanol inclusion in gasoline, farmers are making the decision to dedicate more and more acreage to growing corn (moving away from soybean and wheat) for fuel and less for food. This reduction in food acreage and the growing demand for corn for fuel has contributed to increased food prices. Add in drought conditions in the major food growing areas and, according to the USDA, prices are going to rise three to four percent in 2013 (http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-price-outlook/summary-findings.aspx).

Farmers might counter that the corn produced is used for animal food, but even then, reducing the amount of available feed grain is going to drive up the cost of animal feed. This will have a ripple effect throughout the food processing chain as all producers raise their prices accordingly.

Another troubling development is that with U.S. farmers planting less soybean in favor of corn, Brazilian farmers (the world's leading soybean producers) are stepping up production to fill the gap. This increased soybean production displaces cattle ranchers, who in turn begin clear cutting rainforest to make up for the land lost to the soybean producers. It is a vicious chain that is leading to the destruction of one of the earth's most amazing ecosystems.

The Hidden Costs
Alcohol as an alternative fuel source comes with some serious hidden costs that make it less than ideal and might have serious repercussions for the planet's environment. Since alcohol based fuels contain less energy content than an equal amount of petroleum gasoline, it takes a lot of energy to produce. Some studies have shown an energy deficit in producing alcohol fuel (i.e. it takes more energy to produce than the energy contained in what is produced).

The production of corn for fuel production is not a clean and simple process. A large quantity of water (in excess of 1500 gallons) is required for ever gallon of corn ethanol produced. In addition, the use of fertilizer and poisonous pesticides contributes to runoff that taints water supplies and even contributes to a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico (http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/topics/deadzone/index.html).

The basic properties of alcohol fuel leads to its own problems since alcohol is a corrosive solvent. This means all fuel systems that will utilize an alcohol based fuel will need to be reengineered to be corrosion-proof. This is an expensive, cost prohibitive process for existing fleets and adds extra cost to new vehicles.

Viable Alternatives to Alcohol Based Fuels?
Alcohol derived fuels are not the solution to our energy problems. They have their own set of issues that need to be addressed. So what can be done? There has been some interesting developments in using microorganisms to create fuel molecules and products. Bio-engineered algae has shown (http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/
green-science/algae-biodiesel.htm) great promise as a future fuel source.

There has been a lot of statements made about alcohol based fuels over the years. Parties on both sides of the argument are going to try and get their point across and win the argument. The problem is that the pro-alcohol advocates have an uphill battle to fight. Rising food prices and ecological damage are hard positions to defend. Alcohol based fuels can, at best, be seen as a stepping stone away from petroleum fuels. Let's just hope we can step away fast from the alcohol.

In 2012, 604 million barrels of crude oil were delivered by Texas producers. This is the highest level of Texas oil production in two decades. Texas oil production last peaked in 1992 when 613 million barrels were produced.

This resurgence in Texas oil production has gradually built over the past five years. The natural gas boom did indeed hurt Texas oil producers. Back in 2007, oil production in Texas had fallen to just 391 million barrels.

The increase in Texas oil production in recent years has also brought about a modest increase in employment in the field. Between 2011 and 2012, jobs in the drilling and service sectors were up by 10 percent, while the oil and gas extraction sector experienced a 15 percent job growth. The recent oil boom has also transformed the real estate market in Texas with house prices doubling the past few years.

Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss

While dwindling natural gas prices have unquestionably played a role in the resurgence of crude oil production, it turns out that Texas oil fields once widely regarded as useless just seven years ago actually weren't. This was discovered with the realization that oil can be extracted the same way as natural gas - through a process known as hydraulic fracturing.

The Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas is one example. Oil production in the Eagle Ford didn't start until 2008 but producers are already making more than 350,000 barrels per day. It is projected that daily barrel production could conceivably hit 420,000 within the next two years.

Is it Real and Sustainable?

With the discovery that crude oil could be extracted with hydraulic fracturing, parts of Texas are now reaping the economic benefits of another boom period for the oil industry, which was practically left for dead years ago. That said many in Texas still possess a "when will it bust" mentality. The oil productivity at Eagle Ford is so great that many experts believe that the outlook for the Texas' oil industry will stay strong for years to come.

Everyone is telling everyone else to be conservative about our resources, to be more efficient, to pitch in with the effort in saving our environment. It has become part and parcel of modern human morality to be conscientious of the way one treats the environment and consumes resources. To be callous towards these initiatives immediately makes you a bad, bad person.

Irony of ironies, the funding that supports the loudest pro-conservation voices are often from the gigantic multinational corporations who are most likely doing the most damage to the Earth’s capacity to support the biosphere (that includes us humans). So, the top polluters and resource hogs of the globe are telling us not to consume so much even as the prime directive of every single for-profit corporation is to expand, acquire, and grow despite the environmental and social consequences?

The outright hypocrisy is enough to make you toss the entire message out of the window and just consume what you want until you leave this planet.

I propose that you do not throw the proverbial baby along with the bathwater on this one. Conserving resources has value, and despite the ignoble motives of the companies that outwardly champion the cause while depleting the world’s bounties in the quest to try to own everything, you should still do your part in keeping our home clean and productive.

Here, I have some points that you should consider:

Do It for the Children

First and foremost, you’re not alone in this world. There are people being born literally every second. Significantly more human lives are being added than are taken away, despite our penchant for killing each other. The resource pie is being cut into progressively thinner and thinner wedges, and to make matters worse, there are a few of us who make it a point to make their own share larger and larger.

The young lives being born and are already alive, they need the same kind of resources that you need just for baseline existence. These are our children, our siblings, our fellow human beings. Regardless of religious (or non-religious) affiliation, we put value in another life simply because we feel that we have value as well. Those who have divorced themselves from that idea are on their way to becoming the monsters that are creating these problems in the first place.

Do It for All Other Life

Just as our progeny deserve a shot at being alive, so do all the plants and animals that we are so dependent on for survival. Some people are even into thinking that there isn’t any human primacy over the rest of the biosphere (your child and that cactus have the same “value”), but I won’t get into that; it’s all pretty relative.

Still, you see how important it is not to make it detrimental for these other lifeforms by not indiscriminately taking and destroying as you make your way through the earth. You need these supposedly simpler and non-sentient beings to sustain your own life, after all.

Do It Because You Want to be Better

This is not entirely an altruistic initiative, mind you. To practice restraint, to show compassion, and to take only what you truly need is good for you. By itself, it is an exercise in discipline, an effort to focus your energies properly in attaining a better you. By being responsible with your use of resources, you give way to other people being able to have their fill, and by helping the rest of humanity in being healthier, happier, and more productive, you enrich yourself as well.

Having better-supplied and inevitably more competent members of your species (brought up in an environment of responsible people, no less) will make your people stronger and more adept in handling those challenges that are beyond human control.

What Can Be Done?

I wish for humanity to collectively open their eyes to the reality that we are all that we have, and that we have to help each other in this communal uplifting of mind, body, and spirit. Though these ideas sound rather lofty, everyone can pitch in just by all the small acts of conservation they can do, especially when it comes to fuel and electricity use, two things that have the greatest potential to harm the environment if produced and harvested carelessly.

Search engines are your friend; there is a wealth of information out there that you can learn about on how to conserve. The little things add up: maintaining and purchasing affordable tires so that your vehicle’s gasoline mileage is optimal, keeping track of how much power your electrical appliances are drawing out from the grid (this involves actually learning the rudiments of electricity in order to use tools like digital multimeters), recycling all sorts of items that can still be utilized instead of just being thrown into the dumpsite, the list is literally miles long when the proper research is applied.

We can do this. Conserve, and Live well!

A renovation may be possible but only minor changes can be made. Another way to spruce up the look of an apartment is by rearranging things and adding decorations. Unlike doing major renovation, this strategy is cost effective and less time-consuming.

There are so many decorations you can think of to make your apartment looking pleasant. Take for instance the potted plants which are very practical and easy to find. Most apartments have small areas so adding big and several decorative items may not do the job. Plants add life to any environment. So if you want to integrate plants in your home decor, here are simple tips to achieve it properly.

Decide the theme

– Decide what look you want to achieve in your apartment. Do you want to create a contemporary ambiance or an old time themed space? Always take into consideration your style in deciding how you want your place to appear. And of course, whether you want a modest or a lavish theme, never sacrifice the comfort when you decorate your dwelling. The theme is important in order to choose the right kinds of plants.

Choose the types of plants

– After choosing a theme, select the potted plants that can match with it. If you want a modern look, the best types of plants to use are those with slender or sleek shapes. Plants like dracaena, ponytail palm and snake plant have slim leaves which mean they will not occupy much space. These plants are perfect to be set in the living room. Ferns, pothos, hoya and other plants with broad leaves can bring more dramatic appeal to a Victorian themed apartment.

Be careful in picking the plants for your apartment. Tall potted plants can look good in a high ceiling space while shrub-like plants are perfect on corner. Some plants can be placed on the floor while others are on the table.

Pick unique containers for the plants

– The main purpose of putting plants inside is to improve your interior design. That is why it is also important to choose nice-looking containers for these plants. Most potted plants are in clay pots. So if you want to make the plants more appealing, transfer them into another container. All you need to do is look for pots with unique design. Otherwise, you can just place the plant inside a basket when you set it inside the apartment.

Select a spot for the plants

– Decide which part of your apartment needs improvement. Living room is usually the number one spot to decorate. It is one of the busiest areas in every home, and so it should always look and feel good. Apart from the living area, plants can be placed in the bedroom, kitchen corners, bathroom and along the staircase. Set the potted plants where you want but never overdo to avoid making your apartment look-like a jungle. Place those plants that need plenty of sunlight near or by the windows.

Take care of the plants

– When using plants as decoration, never forget to take good care of them. Of course, you do not want to keep unhealthy looking plants inside your apartment. Rather than making your space pleasant, they might just bring distasteful scene. Water your plants every day. Or you can ask someone else from you family to do it for your if you are too busy. Remember that plants need proper care in order to beautify your apartment.

Potted plants can help you improve the appearance of your apartment without spending much. At the same time, it is eco-friendly decorations.

The current trend of the world’s population nowadays is to head on over to the cities and practically pile up on each other, living in smaller spaces and generally getting in each other’s way. Though I’m not a big fan of high population density, I admit that there are advantages to this arrangement, especially if you’re still working. As for your parents who have retired from the rat race, the advantages are not as pronounced.

For those making the best of the sunset years of their lives, the opposite appears to be more ideal: living in less-crowded, more nature-rich areas. There are many reasons to prefer the countryside over the cityscape, and I’ll be presenting a handful of distinct reason that point towards this assertion.

It’s not that expensive living outside the city, as well. Land values are more relaxed, and so is the lifestyle. Your folks will appreciate the slower (probably more familiar to them) pace, and even if they do want to check up on you, thanks to the advances in telecommunications, you’ll just be a press of a button away. This goes for medical urgent response services as well, so you need not worry too much. Always check up on your folks, regardless of where they are.

Beautiful and Relaxing Scenery

Cities can be beautiful with all the lights and lively activity, but the countryside has its own rustic charm and appeal, especially to those who have lived through their prime years. Depending on where you are, there are vastly different yet equally beautiful vistas to behold in different parts of our great country. Florida may still be the retirement capital of the States, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle down there.

Sit down with your folks with a tablet or notebook computer and brainstorm on where you could spend a short vacation to see the sights. That way, you’ll also be able to scout around for land values and other particulars.

Clean Air

Unless you’re living next to an industrial complex or a mine, country living provides you with cleaner, more pleasant-smelling air. Granted, you best be ready with your antihistamines in case of an allergic reaction to pollen or some other natural compound, but overall, country air is better for your body.

This is the easiest to demonstrate to your senior parental units. Go to the countryside, and simply inhale.

Clean Food and Water

If the place has clean air, it’s very likely that the food and water are just as fresh and nourishing. With all the pollutants and potentially harmful synthetic chemicals we absorb by eating processed food and inhaling dirty air, spending the last few decades of life in detox is a literally fresh change of pace.

Visit an organic vegetable garden or farm in the locality and partake of Nature’s bounty.

Less-Crowded

Don’t take your folks to a ghost town. Find a place where the community is small yet well-knit, organized, and supportive. A handful of helpful friends trumps a crowd of apathetic strangers. Your folks might be older, but this doesn’t mean they are not open to making new friends.

It would be more ideal if there are enough people in community within the same age bracket as your parents. Find out the kind of hobbies they engage in, as well as other significant cultural characteristics (religion included). You don’t want your folks to feel isolated or awkward with their potential new neighbors.

Finished packing? Hurry up and travel with the folks and see the countryside!

For many gardeners, the chilly temperatures and lack of sunlight in winter make these scenarios the faintest of fantasies. But with a greenhouse, you can enjoy tropical plants and warm-season edibles all year round. There are many ways to create your own greenhouse, from building a kit-style greenhouse to DIY-ing it to using cold frames to extend the growing season.

Picking a Greenhouse Style

How much space do you have for a greenhouse? If you live in an apartment and garden on your balcony, a cold frame may be your best bet. This resembles a wooden box with a glass or Plexiglas lid. The lid insulates the cold frame so you can start seeds earlier in the spring and extend your growing season past the last frost date. Turn cold frames into hot frames by placing heaters beneath the box.

If you've got a large backyard garden and a sunny area-- shade will not offer enough heat and light for this venture -- create your own standing greenhouse. Kits snap together for easy assembly, while online plans teach you how to create a greenhouse out of PVC pipes, wood, plastic bottles and other materials.

Before you build this type of structure, create a foundation with landscape fabric, which will keep the weeds out. Add a 4-inch layer of gravel, which gives water somewhere to go so it doesn't puddle beneath the greenhouse. Browse garden and design blogs to view styles and get inspiration for your greenhouse, then build your own for find a greenhouse kit that includes all the necessary supplies.

What You'll Need

While the greenhouse structure does most of the work for you, you'll need additional supplies to keep your plants healthy and happy. A proper foundation keeps grass from growing inside your greenhouse. Tropical plants and edibles need to be kept warm in the winter. Use heaters to keep the interior at or above 55 degrees Fahrenheit, so plants don't freeze. To easily track greenhouse temperature, install a wall thermometer. If temperatures climb too high, turn down the heater or open the door or window to allow the excess heat and moisture to escape.

Greenhouse plants should have light 12 hours per day, which makes natural light super important. Overhead lighting allows you to illuminate plants during winter when you have less natural light, and on cloudy days as well. Look for plant grow lights, then use a 125-wall high-pressure sodium bulb, which simulates sunlight better than incandescent lights.

You'll also need a system for watering the plants. Misting works well and is manageable in a small area. For larger greenhouses, you may want to install irrigation tubing with tiny holes that allow you to water the plants. Provide mist via an overhead track of irrigation tubing. This tubing stretches, so can conform to any greenhouse layout. Installing it takes a bit of time but once it's up, it requires no maintenance.

Green your water supply by keeping a rain barrel on hand. These collect natural rainfall and store it. An adapted barrel that fits a hose allows you to water garden and greenhouse plants with reclaimed water, cutting down on your use of natural resources.

Give greenhouse growing a try! The initial setup can be intimidating, but newbie-friendly kits help you get started. Greenhouse plants require regular monitoring but do not need time-intensive care. The rewards of growing your own food and lush plants during the dreary winter months will quickly make up for any work you have to do.

If you already have common green ideas in motion such as plastic over the windows, there are still a few stones left unturned. Listed below, there are five interesting ways to ensure that you do not need to turn on the heat all winter long.

Get a wood heating stove

Despite the initial expense of having a wood burning stove properly installed in your home, the savings can be immense. This is especially true if you live near wooded areas. Throughout the year, as the city begins to trim trees, you can start your wood collecting. Once you start placing a focus on it, you soon realize there are multiple opportunities to collect free wood to burn in the winter. Naturally, burning wood saves on fossil fuel heating costs.

The heating power of compost

Do you always save scraps from meals and put them in the compost bin? If so, you have an easy to harness source of heat and methane gas. However, what you do not need is a giant pile of rotting food in the middle of your living room. Instead, there are several high-tech eco-friendly devices that collect and distribute this heat for you. Some upscale models also include a methane collection device that re-routes to specially fitted gas appliances. All you need to do with any compost heap model is add daily scraps and perform a minimal amount of maintenance.

Hay bale your house

In order to get the edge on an environmental way to save money, use one of the oldest barn warming techniques on record. Instead of building an unsupervised fire in a barn, farmers typically kept their animals warm throughout the winter by stacking hay around the barn itself. While this sounds like a funny idea for the suburbs, the truth is that you do not need to have livestock in order to buy hay bales and surround your home with them. If neighbors give you the stink eye about your green way to save energy, you can always disguise them by wrapping the exposed hay bales in attractive plastic wrap. The hay bales can also be included as part of your holiday outdoor display.

Living walls and green roofs

Have you ever seen a home that has a garden on top of the roof or plants growing up the sides of the outside walls? Although it takes a considerable amount of preparation, starting a living wall or green roof means that you will have a warm house all winter. Instead of adding insulation inside of the walls, this takes care of the heat loss issue from the outside. Living walls and green roofs are impressive on their own, but their ability to seal cracks without lifting a finger saves a considerable amount of money for homeowners.

DIY indoor overalls

Have you ever wanted to wrap yourself in a warm blanket on a cold day and never take it off? If you have an arts and crafts streak, you can make your own indoor warmth garment from an old blanket. The idea is to loosely make a full body cutout and sew the two sides together. Add a coat zipper and a hood to include a little bit of extra warmth. There are similar prefabricated models on the market, but making your own from scratch means extra green points for re-using an old blanket.

For the African-American citizens of the United States, no other hero quite stands out as Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a man of vision to many and a strong proponent of nonviolent solutions to conflicts. King is revered as a great man who helped advocate African-American civil rights through nonviolent confrontation. His methods were successful even beyond the events that led to his assassination in 1968. His memory will continue to survive in many throughout the passing of years and will never be forgotten.

1. The Speech - "I Have a Dream" is one of the most recognizable speeches in American history. King delivered this speech in front of the Lincoln memorial, which is appropriately fitting as President Lincoln assisted in the freedom of slaves in the mid to late 1800s. The speech was 17 minutes long and has inspired a great deal of people since it was delivered in 1963.

2. Bloody Sunday - On March 7, 1965, a protest march to the Alabama capital of Montgomery came to an abrupt halt when law enforcement and suspected individuals from the mob beat the protestors with severe prejudice just shortly after they began. Unknown to the law enforcement individuals at the time, their actions against the protestors gave the movement a violent push forward as the incident made national news. Support for the movement grew exponentially from the experience and those same law enforcement individuals who attempted to thwart this instance gave it more meaning than anything those protestors would have accomplished had they been allowed to walk. Although this was a tragedy of an incident, it was an act that gave momentum to the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

3. Opposing Vietnam - In 1967, King argued that the war in Vietnam was using resources and money that could have been better spent improving the United States. It's funny how present times emulate history in certain aspects. As we are sitting comfortably in the U.S., billions of dollars are being spent in order to keep actions alive in the Middle-East. In fact, Vietnam and the Middle-East have much in common and the same declarations made by Martin Luther King, Jr. would have the same power and meaning if they were spoken today. However, the opposition to Vietnam had cost King quite a bit of support among Caucasian allies. Despite the conflict of interest, King held tight to his position and stood his ground with conviction.

African-Americans aren't the only ones who revere King as a great man. His teachings of nonviolent resolutions have impacted people of all creeds. He is a testament to the belief that conflicts can be overcome through nonviolent determination. While many of us strive to put that sentiment to practice, it doesn't always work out that way. Show your understanding of nonviolence by visiting the Nonviolent Peaceforce and contribute to a world free from violence and war.

Making your home more energy efficient leads to long-term savings. Insulation, a new energy-efficient boiler and double-glazing helps to lower your household bills and even contributes to a reduction in your carbon footprint. However, these measures aren’t free. Although there are a limited number of government subsidies available, costs for installing 270mm of insulation can run into the hundreds. Double-glazing is costly too and a new boiler can set you back a couple of grand.

For families on a tight budget, making their homes more energy efficient is rather costly and not doable without some outside help. That outside help could come in the form of a new mortgage plan, or remortgage. For an idea of how much you may be able to save by remortgaging check out mortgage payment calculator. You simply enter your details and out pops a figure; it’s really that simple to use the mortgage payment calculator.

Once you have an idea on how much you could expect to save with a new mortgage you know how much you have to spend on making a few energy efficiency changes to your home.

£100-£1000 to spend

Heat rises so most heat is lost through your loft and roof. The easiest way to minimize heat loss is to install more insulation. The Energy Saving Trust recommends 270mm of insulation. Many houses in the UK only have around 100mm of insulation and some don’t have any insulation at all. By upgrading your level of insulation you can save up to £175 per year. If you install insulation yourself you’ll just pay for the fibre-glass insulation, but if you seek the services of a professional you could pay up to £350.

Cavity wall insulation installation also costs between £100 and £350. Annual savings are around £135, so it’ll pay for itself in less than three years. Together you’re looking at a combined cost of a around £700 max.

£2,000-£3,000 to spend

According to the Energy Saving Trust, it cost around £2,300 to replace an old gas boiler and upgrade it for a new A-rated version. Once the boiler is in however, you can save between £105 and £300 per year on your energy bills.

£3,000+ to spend

Replacing old, single-glazed windows in your home is costly it costs around £7,000 to replace all the windows in a typical British terrace so despite saving £165 per year on energy costs, this will take a long time to pay for itself. However, there are other benefits. Your home will be warmer, less draughty, quieter and more attractive. Find out more about the benefits of installing double-glazing on the Energy Saving Trust’s website.

How can the rest of us help our environment? What is good gas mileage from a regular car these days?

Apparently, the most efficient cars are getting over 30/city and over 40/highway. The classic trade-off tends to be horsepower. For this reason, most cars that make this list are small. For most compacts, horsepower hovers around 110. For small cars, it hovers around 130. Here are some cars with exceptional gas mileage that don’t have hybrid technology.

Several small cars under $15,000 offer very good gas mileage, and consumers should settle for nothing less in any compact that they consider buying. Nissan offers the Versa, which gets 31 mpg city/40 mpg highway. Chevy offers the Spark (32/38). Toyota offers the Yaris (30/37). Ford sells the Fiesta (29/40). Lower horsepower is less of a problem in a very small car, and the great fuel economy will help pay for the car.

Between $15K and $20K, Honda offers the Fit (27/33) and the best-selling Civic (28/39). Ford still offers the Fusion as a non-hybrid, and it can get 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg in the city. Toyota offers the Corolla, which can get 27/34 mpg. The Smart forwo cabriolet gets 34/38 mpg.

As cars get bigger, it becomes more challenging to offer enough power and still offer fuel economy. These midsize cars seem to have struck a good balance. The Chevy Cruse Eco gets 28 city/42 highway. The Hyundai Elantra can get 28 city/40 highway. The non-hybrid Honda Accord gets 27 city/36 highway. The non-hybrid Toyota Camry gets 25 city/35 highway. The gas-powered Accord and gas-powered Camry are much cheaper than their hybrid models.

Diesels have been improving, too. Volkswagen, which employs a clean diesel engine with 85 percent less emissions, has achieved the best diesel fuel economy. The Jetta, with a base price of $22K for a diesel model, gets 30 city/42 highway. The Golf, with a base price of $25K for diesel, also gets 30/42. The slightly bigger Passat, with a base price of $26K for diesel, gets 31/42. The Audi A3 also offers a cleaner diesel with 30 city/42 highway.

Larger cars simply can’t cut it without a hybrid boost. For instance, Buick added a hybrid boost to its Regal and LaCrosse models to achieve 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. This is actually good for larger cars. This is an example of a mild hybrid that boosts horsepower and improves fuel economy. Other than Buick, most luxury models are lagging behind on hybrids and high efficiency gas models.

EcoGuides are very useful tools for helping drivers learn to conserve fuel. A simple on/off button that restarts the engine, as in many hybrids, saves fuel and reduces emissions at every stoplight, traffic jam or drive-through. These are not to be confused with Eco buttons. Eco buttons rely on the driver's willingness to save fuel. When assessing a car, remember that the engine should achieve published fuel economy without the aid of the driver.

Consumers who are looking for a new car should look for the best possible fuel economy. Improving our environment is a long process, but we can all help by reducing our carbon footprint.

However, very few actually know how to dispose them off properly. With the recent emphasis on recycling and reuse, the government has tried to inculcate the habit of proper waste disposal in its citizens. When you dispose your waste properly, you take a step in ensuring that your immediate surrounding is safe from impact of hazardous substances. Here are four methods for proper disposal of domestic waste -

1. Recycling

Recycling is one of the most well know method of managing waste. It is not expensive and can be easily done by you. When you recycle, you also save energy and money. You can recycle papers, glass, aluminum and plastics. Use papers with prints on one side as scrap paper instead of throwing them away. Ask your children to use cardboard boxes to create handicrafts. Recycling also helps you reduce the volume of the waste you send to landfills.

You can eliminate batteries, tires and asphalt from ending up in the landfills and incinerator. The municipality of almost all cities encourages their citizens to take up recycling. Be a responsible citizen and reduce your waste by recycling.

2. Composting

This is a natural process that is completely free of any hazardous by-products. This process involves breaking down the materials into organic compounds that can be used as manure. You can carry out composting in your own backyard. You can compost almost the waste product except bones, animal body parts and metals. You can use leaves, grass, twigs, vegetable and fruit peels, nut hulls, eggshells, tea bags, ground coffee and even paper.

You can use bins that are approved by the DATS Environmental Services for composting. After a few days, you will see that the matter has decomposed. You can use this compost, which is rich in nutrients, to improve the soil in your garden.

3. Landfills

In landfills, a large area is dug open and filled with the waste. The area is then covered up with soil. Landfills are not safe because they give off gases like methane, which are highly hazardous. You should not carry out waste management through landfills if you cannot ensure proper safety means. The landfill should be properly lined and the waste should not come in contact with the adjoining areas. Individuals normally do not carry out disposal through landfills. The waste that is carried by the municipality lands up here.

It is your duty as a citizen to ensure that you do not dispose hazardous wastes in the same packets as normal wastes because they will also end up in the landfill and cause great environmental hazards.

4. Burning The Waste Material

Burning the waste material is also a quick way to dispose domestic waste. However, be carefully to check whether the waste you are combusting are safe to burn and would not cause explosions or create fumes that are bad for health.

These are the four most popular methods of disposing domestic wastes. Domestic waste is less in volume and therefore easier to dispose.

Glass bottles and jars along with boxes were mainly used as containers for items we would pick up at the store. You did not hear a lot about recycling then but even during these years my parents were always teaching us kids to be conscientious about such things.

The main way my folks encouraged us to take care of our environment was just ingraining it into us from the time we were small. Mom was always pointing out different plants and trees and giving us the names. She shared what the different types of plants were and the care they needed. She was also pointing out trash to us and would go out of her way to pick it up. Before anti-littering laws, signs, and commercials there was mom. She was adamant that we not litter but beyond that she would see a parking lot or a beach with litter and we just knew we were going to be cleaning it up. That was just how we were raised.

This is what I see as the main way to encourage our children to save our environment. Teach them from the time they are small, make it a habit just like brushing your teeth. If you start when they are tiny they will not even know that they are doing anything different than anyone else in the world. That is the way it was for me. I just thought everyone cared about the world we lived in. As I got older I was shocked to find out that that indeed was not the case.

When I was growing up we had bottles of soda pop and not cans. My brothers and I loved to find bottles because that meant a nickel back at the corner store and do you know how much candy you could get for a nickel then? A lot! It was quite an incentive to pick up bottles for us. If you have older children and you have the time to take them to a recycling center for aluminum cans that would be a good incentive for them to start saving their cans or picking them up when they spotted one. A large sack of cans can bring in a few dollars and a couple of sacks may make it worth their while. Even though monetary gains should not be the primary reason for saving the environment it could be a fun trip to see the recycling centers. Boys are particularly drawn to these places since there is heavy equipment and huge magnets and lots of noise. My son loved going with his dad.

My dad also instilled conserving electricity and water by constantly reminding us that we did not own the electric company and if we wanted any to be left for when we got older we should be wise in its use! Dad was always going around the house turning off the lights and watching how long the water was running. When we watered the plants or garden he actually timed it. When we bathed we were allowed only enough water to bath. No worries, we were still clean.

Mom was always teaching us about plants and gardens. She would let each one of us pick what we would like to plant in the garden each time she planted. I always tried my hand at corn and tomatoes without much success. I learned over the years how to have a successful garden by trial and error with mom as my coach. It was great fun to plant something that you could later eat! This is a great way to get your kids interested in gardening and eating their veggies! I looked forward to the garden each time in the hopes that my next crop would be the best. My brothers were always out to grow watermelons because they grew so fast and got so big. No matter what your child wants to grow it will be a wonderful experience and a way to give back to the earth. My daughter loved peaches and pears so she wanted to plant a tree. It took a few years but we finally got fruit and she was thrilled!

We also made good use of everything in our yard when I was growing up. When we raked the leaves we would use them as mulch on our plants. Mom taught us about the bugs that helped a garden like the lady bugs and told us how to get rid of the bugs that hurt the garden. Mom always used natural pesticides. She had learned homemade pesticides from her mother and grandmother before her. All these things were then passed on to us and in turn we are passing them on to our children.

We always had quite a few animals as we were growing up as well and were taught to take care of our animals. We fed them, bathed them, and made sure they were always healthy. We had a pigeon coop full of pigeons, a kennel full of beagles, an English bull dog in the house and a pet canary. There was never a dull moment at our house. It is good for children to learn how to care for animals as well as other human beings. Children need to learn to take care of other people’s needs as well as their own and think about the plants and animals as well.

As I said earlier my mom and dad both were very much anti liter motivated. If they saw anyone littering they would make sure and point it out and let us know how wrong it was. If we ran across a parking lot or beach front that was littered we would start picking up trash. There is no way that mom or dad would walk through a grocery store parking lot and step over a piece of trash. I believe that our children learn not only from what we teach them but what they see us doing as well. You are the main example in your children’s lives and what you do does make an impression.

My dad loved to fish and we used to take many trips out on the lakes fishing. He taught us all about fish and about keeping our lakes clean so the fish would thrive. I also had an uncle who loved to hunt and fish and he taught us so much about the forest and the lakes and how to keep them clean and healthy for the next generations. I guess what I am trying to say is that you should surround your children with those of a like mind in regards to the environment. It is important to teach your children anything and everything you can about the environment from the time they are very small. This will ensure that you are raising an environmentally conscious individual who will keep it going from one generation to another. Make an impact on your child and they will make an impact on everyone they meet. Let us pass it on!
